Before reading the book, I was pathetic at drawing. I drew like a kid, and I even hated drawing!
After reading only half of the book last summer(98), and doing all the exercises up to that point, my technique improved unimaginably!
Terumi also used the book, a year ago, in the first drawing class she took! She says it helped her A LOT!!! I think we can see the results in the beautiful drawings that she makes!!!
The book is great because it teaches you to 'see' like an artist sees. Normally, we see (and then draw), with the left side of our brain. This is the linguistic, symbolic, logical side of the brain. You look at a person, you see their nose, you recognize it with your left brain as a nose (i.e., you identify what you see with your internal nose 'symbol'), and then you end up drawing your symbol for a nose, and not exactly what is really out there in front of you.
The book teaches you, through a series of well-thought-out exercises, to see and draw with your right side of the brain. This consists of 'seeing' edges, spaces, proportions, and light & shadow.
Some people discover these principles of 'seeing' by themselves, through luck, practice, and intuition. But instead of discovering them accidentally, you can LEARN them too!
If you want to improve your drawing technique, THIS IS THE ONE BOOK YOU SHOULD READ!!!
